Time Duration Calculator

Find the elapsed time between two clock times, including durations that cross midnight.

The Time Duration Calculator measures the elapsed time between two clock values without mixing in payroll policy, break deductions, or wage rules. It is useful when the user needs a clean hours-and-minutes interval, including an interval that crosses midnight, while still seeing the equivalent decimal duration for scheduling or record comparison.

Input guide

Start time

Enter the start time used for this estimate and confirm that its unit and pay period match the other inputs.

End time

Enter the end time used for this estimate and confirm that its unit and pay period match the other inputs.

How this calculator works

Elapsed minutes = end time − start time, adding 24 hours when the interval crosses midnight.

Worked example

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.50 hours.

How to interpret the result

The hours-and-minutes result shows elapsed clock time, while decimal hours provide the same interval in payroll-style notation. Because no break is deducted, this result should not automatically be treated as paid work time.

Rounding policy

Elapsed time

Calculated to the nearest whole minute.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The interval is shorter than 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can the interval cross midnight?

Yes. An earlier end time is treated as the next day.

Does this subtract lunch?

No. Use the Shift Calculator or Hours Worked Calculator for break deductions.

How should I verify the time duration result?

Compare the inputs and formula with time records, payroll policy, the employment agreement, and any applicable primary source before relying on the estimate.

Is the time duration calculation stored online?

No. MyClockLedger calculations run in the browser and do not require uploading the entered values.
