How this calculator works
Carried hours = balance remaining after entered forfeiture, limited by the carryover cap. Estimated payout = eligible forfeited hours × hourly rate.
Worked example
With 72 ending hours and a 40-hour carryover limit, 40 hours carry and 32 do not. At a 50% payout and $25 per hour, the estimated payout is $400.
How to interpret the result
Use the result to understand which hours remain available, which may be lost under the entered rule and what a user-entered payout assumption would produce. It is not a legal entitlement decision.
Rounding policy
Policy hours and payout
Hours and percentages are rounded to two decimals; money is rounded to the nearest cent.
Assumptions and limitations
- A zero carryover limit means no additional cap in this planning tool.
- The calculator does not determine whether forfeiture or payout is legally permitted.
Frequently asked questions
Does zero mean no carryover?
In this calculator, zero for the carryover limit means unlimited carryover. Enter the actual policy limit when one exists.
Does this determine my legal payout?
No. It only applies the percentage and rate you enter. Verify the governing policy and law separately.
When should I recalculate with the PTO Carryover Calculator?
Recalculate when balances, accrual, planned usage, carryover limits, caps, payout terms or hourly rates change.
Why does the PTO Carryover Calculator separate policy inputs?
Accrual, balance caps, carryover, forfeiture, payout and eligibility are different policy concepts and should not be collapsed into one percentage.
