Start with coverage and skill mix

Clinical schedules must cover required roles, units and handoff periods—not only headcount. Build the staffing requirement before assigning individual shifts.

Model three 12-hour shifts carefully

Three 12-hour shifts equal 36 scheduled hours before meetings, handoffs, education or extra coverage. Record additional paid time separately so it is not hidden.

Protect recovery time

Review consecutive shifts, night-to-day changes, on-call obligations and commute time. Fatigue controls and clinical policy are outside a generic calculator and require local governance.

Audit changes after publication

Track swaps, call-ins, extensions and missed breaks with an audit trail. Compare planned and actual hours before payroll approval.
