Core structure
The Pitman pattern commonly uses a two-week 2-2-3 rotation with 12-hour shifts. Teams alternate short and long workweeks, often receiving every other weekend off.
Calculate staffing needs
Continuous coverage generally requires multiple crews plus relief capacity. Calculate required positions by shift and include vacation, sick leave, training and expected absence.
Compare short and long weeks
Do not hide the variation behind one average. Show the hours in each workweek, projected overtime and the effect of shift swaps.
Document the rules
Define start times, rotation direction, handoff windows, break treatment and swap approvals. The schedule name does not answer these operational questions.
